悠游2 janvier Happy New YearHappy new year to everyone! Although it's a late one, there're more new years coming soon (Russian, Chinese ...) It's a long time since last update, because I completely switched to linux and haven't spent time figuring out whether it's possible to use MSN messenger ... so sorry to all friends whose spaces hadn't been visited vy myself in the last several months. Along with friends I travelled in Florida during Christmas break and I'll definitely post some photos later. Now I've been in 3 of the 4 corners of US continent part! The next would be Washington ... :-) 8 octobre Click --- but be carefulI have to say Adam Sandler is just so
great, as an actor and producer. You see this typical role of a good
man who ends of embarrassing himself constantly, which can be told even
in his symbolic smile. Monday is a holiday and the 3-day long weekend
seems so nice (I know it's not comparable with the 7-day national break
some of you guys just had). But seriuosly I had the chance watching
Adam Sandler's latest movie Click.
As to the story line, I guess we have heard of the similar story
before, about one who had the magic control of his life (a uniersal
remote control in this movie). It helped him fast forward when life
seemed difficult --- everything seemed so beautiful at the beginning
untill he realized that he missed so much of his life, which turned out
to be the really most beautiful senery in his life. I have to say that
everyone has such a remote control, invisible in his (her) mind. It's a
gift from the god since it protects us from being hurt when our mind
can skip some of the hardest time of our life. But this natural
psycological protection mechanism can't just be over used, when one
simply buries his head in sands without reacting actively to the tough
environment around --- that's auto-piloting. I believe I had such
auto-piloting time but I don't like it. Perhaps the whole process, no
matter pains or gains, it's just all about life. Perhaps we lose more
than we gain when we keep skipping those bad times. ![]() 4 octobre Good quotes fom EinsteinI read an article on Einstein recently --- My Three Einsteins by Corey S. Powell (Discover). The author essentially reviewed Albert Einstein at three levels: symbolic, scientific and philosophical. I noticed some quotes from Einstein which I would like to share and keep to my kind.
"I believe in Spinoza's god who reveals himself in the harmony of all that exists, not in a god who concerns himself with the fate and actions of human beings."
"I am not only a pacifist but a militant pacifist. I am willing to fight for peace ... Is it not better for a man to die for a cause in which he believes, such as peace, than to suffer for a cause in which he does not believe, such as war?"
"What I see in Nature is a grand designthat we can understand imperfectly, one which a responsible person must look at with humility. This is a genuinely religious feeling and has nothing to do with mysticism."
And hats off to this year's Nobel prizers in Physics Mather and Smoot "for their discovery of the blackbody form and anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background radiation".
25 septembre Before September walks awayI know the last time I updated was Augest 1st. To make sure that I have at least one blog entry in each month, I write the bull$hit here before September walks away So what's new? It's hard to come up with something new out of the routinary student life everyday: home ---> office ---> home ---> office ---> ... (all right I stop here). But almost 2 months passed, there must be something beyond the two oscillating states, which I'm putting here: I went to New York at the end of August, presenting a conference paper. It's unfortunately my first presentation during an international conference. I did my work I guess, at least I answered questions, now matter how I did it. I met with my old friends there and I did enjoy the foods a lot. I can't believe that a 4 dishes + 1 soup combination costs $4 or so in Chinatown untill I see it with my eyes. I didn't test the quality but you NewYorkers! BTW, You won't believe that this is only the 2nd time for me being in NYC, given the fact that I'm 4hrs drive away. But the big apple is not that attractive to me at all, for some reason. Manhattan is OK, maybe not my type. I thought I would go to this year's ACS but I didn't due to funding issue. So I didn't have the chance exploring SF. My labmate presented my work for me, on top of his. It's quite comforting though when my advisor said the movie I made elucidating my research was the only highlight in that talk. And I moved again, after spending a year in a small room which has the essence of the nature --- it's hot in the summer and freezing in the winter. Now I moved back to the same apartment I lived before, even in the same room. I don't have much time arranging the room --- some of the stuff are still intact in boxes. But I do enjoy the space and no sweat upon the gas bill. What else? All these look nothing of "updates" with you? I'm leaving for dinner you jerk. 1 août MSN Spaces to Windows Live SpacesI noticed this failure to load my MSN space earlier with some error message saying something about "Windows Live", which made me totally lost. Now I can access it and the interface looks much similar to the old one, but the major items get wider columns, fitting well to the screen. You may also notice that the webpage is now on server live.com although the old msn.com addresses are still forwarded to this new ones.
Some literature survey proved the action. Based on Tech World, it has tighter integration to instant messengers (IM) from Microsoft. The IM market is occupied by MSN and Yahoo messengers here in US (70%~80%). I thought ICQ or Google Talk might have more market shares but it's not the case. But apparently Google Talk is surging, with Google's everywhere expansion (they're working on a payment system now, competing with PayPal and OMG is there anything they are not aiming at yet? don't really wanna see another Microsoft). Microsoft and Yahoo are taking advantage of their dominance in operating system and internet service respectively. Moreover, the two giants are combining their strength so that the two networks see each other on a common platform (Washington Post, July 29). The latest beta versions of both softwares are actually available now.
This might be a bad news for QQ. I have no idea about QQ's market share in China. But I do know that with the launch of MSN spaces back in December 2004, MSN Messenger was more popular. QQ has its own advantage though, majorly on the online gaming. I personally used MSN Messengers first, since most of my friends had them. Some used Yahoo! and QQ, even Sina UC (anyone here?). Due to the habit I formed earlier and my inertia, I used nothing else untill I was forced to use QQ a month ago, so that my parents could monitor me online 24/7. And I don't plan to add QQ contacts. But the fact is, I seldomly chat online at all, even with MSN. So if you see me there, you catch a rare event :) |
